Should I fill out an application if I can't foster right now?

Because we don't keep application on file for more than 30 days... please only fill out an application when you can start fostering within a week.

I filled out a foster application but I haven't heard back ?

We look at every application we recieve. In some instances we can not approve a foster application, or after reviewing your application we do not have a dog that will fit with your lifestyle. We always try to get back with you either way, but because we are a small group of volunteers please understand if you don't receive a timely response.

Can I adopt the dog I am fostering?

It is possible. However you must meet the criteria that we have for adopters. For instance, we don't adopter to renters... however many of our fosters are renters. We have different adoption criteria for adopters who are committing to the lifetime of the animal.

Can I pick the dog I want to foster?

Yes, we will send you a list of available dogs that will fit in your lifestyle based on the answers in your application.

How long do I need to foster ?

You agree to foster until the dog is adopted. Could be 1 week or 6 months.

What areas are your foster homes located?

We have foster homes in South Bend, Fort Wayne, Warsaw , Indianapolis , Northwest Indiana, Illinois and S W Michigan.

Questions & answers

1)    EVERY DOG IS SPAY/NEUTERED AND UP TO DATE ON SHOTS BEFORE THEY GO TO A FOSTER HOME.

2)    AFTER YOUR FOSTER APPLICATION IS APPROVED, WE WILL CONTACT YOU WITH A DESCRIPTION AND PHOTO OF AVAILABLE DOGS THAT WE FEEL WILL FIT WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE AND FAMILY. YOU CAN CHOOSE THE DOG FROM THE LIST THAT WE SEND YOU.

3)    MOST OF THE DOGS WE RESCUE ARE OVER 30LBS.

4)    WE PROVIDE FOOD, HEART WORM PREVENTATIVE, FLEA CONTROL , CRATES FOR ALL FOSTER DOGS,

5)    NOT ALL APPLICATIONS ARE APPROVED.

6)   ALTHOUGH WE PROVIDE A CRATE FOR YOUR FOSTER DOG... WE DO NOT AGREE WITH CRATING A DOG COMING FROM A SHELTER FOR LONGER THAN 5 HOURS A DAY. MOST DOGS HAVE ANXIETY ISSUES . IF YOU WORK A FULL TIME JOB AND NO ONE ELSE WILL BE HOME...OR NO ONE CAN LET THE DOG OUT WHEN YOUR AT WORK, WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO APPROVE YOUR APPLICATION.

OTHER FACTORS WE LOOK AT WHEN APPROVING A FOSTER:: Do you have a clean safe home and yard for a foster dog?  Will the foster dog be treated as a family companion?  Will your other animals get along with a foster dog? Are your animals up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered?

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FOSTER PLEASE DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

Is fostering for you?

At S.A.D. our main priority is to rescue Death Row Dogs from High Kill Shelters.

Fostering a dog in need can be one of the most rewarding acts that you can do. With each foster home we are able to save another dog’s life  So many of the dogs at the shelters are terrified, scared and timid, often too afraid to even eat. Once removed from the shelter and placed in a caring foster home where they can feel safe and their confidence built back up,  they are some of the most loyal and thankful pets around!

Fostering a dog can be anywhere from a week to a year. You will need to commit to fostering that dog until they are adopted as we do not have a kennel facility or open foster homes to place them in.

When S.A.D. pulls a dog from the shelter we don’t know what their personalities are or issues might be.

Before we pull a dog from a shelter we must have a foster in place.

We will get a photo and short description of the dogs that are scheduled for euthanasia, in some cases we
will have only hours to act.

That is why it is so important to be an approved foster parent now, before we get the Death Row List.

We can not rescue every dog on the list, S.A.D. and the foster parent will review the list together for the best fit in their home.

We are looking for patient, caring, dedicated people who can open their heart and home to a dog in need.
